Day One: Arrival in Oaxaca & Welcome Dinner

On our first evening together, we’ll gather for a group dinner in Oaxaca’s historic Centro at a stunning local restaurant. This is where everyone will meet, connect, and raise a glass to the start of an epic adventure ahead.

The menu is packed with authentic Oaxacan flavors—I highly recommend trying the Mole Trio con Pollo, a local specialty featuring green, red, and black mole served over a perfectly cooked chicken breast. It’s the perfect way to kick off our time together in Oaxaca.

  • Please plan to arrive in Oaxaca by 3:00 PM on November 14th. That said, I highly recommend flying in on the 13th if you can. Oaxaca City is absolutely gorgeous, with so much to explore—from vibrant markets to historic plazas—and arriving a day early gives you the chance to settle in and enjoy it all. (I’ll be flying in on the 13th myself!)

  • Upon arrival at OAX Airport, we encourage attendees to use the official taxi cab stand inside the airport to book a ride directly to Hotel Naura. You’re also welcome to connect with other attendees in the WhatsApp group if you’d like to share a taxi. In addition, we recommend downloading the DiDi app—a popular rideshare service in Oaxaca and other Latin American cities—for convenient and reliable transportation.

  • We’ll be staying at Hotel Naura, a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Oaxaca City. It’s known for its modern design, comfortable rooms, and warm local hospitality. The hotel is centrally located, making it easy to explore Oaxaca’s vibrant restaurants, markets, and cultural landmarks during your free time.

Day Two: Build Day 1

In the morning, we’ll take a short 30-minute bus ride just outside Oaxaca City to the community where families will soon receive their new homes. Our non-profit partner, TECHO, will be waiting with their team and 40 Mexican university student volunteers, ready to build alongside us. All of the materials—walls, roof, pilings, and more—will be onsite and prepared for construction.

When we arrive, you’ll meet the volunteers and the family you’ll be building for. Together with five TECHO volunteers and a few members of our group, you’ll head to your build site and get to work. We’ll spend the day building, working hard, and sharing laughs until sunset. Then we’ll return to the hotel for a well-earned dinner and some time to relax.

  • For construction - Comfortable, work appropriate clothing, comfortable closed toed shoes (boots preferred, sneakers ok), work gloves, a hat, a cup or reusable water bottle, sunscreen, bug repellent.

Optional for build project - Meals are provided, but we recommend bringing non-perishable snacks. Do not bring valuables. You may bring a hammer, measuring tape, and screwdrivers. Extension cords, portable chargers, and a speaker are not essential but can make the stay more comfortable.

For leisure - Comfortable clothing, clothes for dinner, personal hygiene kit.

  • In early fall Oaxaca, Mexico, experiences pleasant and mild weather, making it an ideal time to visit. Here's what you can typically expect:

    • Temperature: Daytime highs range from 24–28°C (75–82°F), while nighttime lows can drop to 10–13°C (50–55°F), so it can feel cool in the evenings and early mornings.

    • Rainfall: August is part of Oaxaca's dry season, so rainfall is minimal. Expect mostly clear skies and dry conditions.

    • Humidity: Humidity levels are generally low, contributing to the comfortable weather.

    • Sunshine: You can expect plenty of sunshine, with many sunny or partly cloudy days.

  • Our build will take place in Del Bosque, a community located next to El Manantial, where last year’s project was held. View location on Google Maps.

Del Bosque is a brand new partner community for TECHO Oaxaca, with collaboration beginning in April of this year. The need here is significant: at least 65% of families lack access to adequate housing and bathrooms, and the community has no regular or secure access to water. By building homes in Del Bosque, we’ll be helping to address some of these urgent challenges while supporting families on their journey to stability and dignity.

  • Please expect to work from 8 AM - Sunset on Saturday and Sunday.

You should expect to work outside in the sun, and complete tasks such as digging holes, carrying building materials up to 50 pounds, and completing movements such as hammering and lifting.

Day Three: Build Day 2 & Key Ceremony

At 7:00 AM, we’ll head back to the build site for another full day of construction. By sunset, your team will likely complete the home—just in time for the key ceremony. This powerful moment is when you’ll hand the keys to the head of the family (often the mother) and watch them step into their new home for the very first time. It’s a memory that stays with you forever—one of the most moving experiences you can imagine.

Afterward, we’ll return to the hotel to celebrate with a well-earned mezcal margarita, share stories, and toast to a job well done before resting up for the next day.

  • If everyone on site is committed to the project and gives their best effort the home should be finished within the two days. For reference on our previous build in November of 2024 the Leadr team was able to complete their home build by lunch time on the second day. From there we were able to help other sites that were not moving as quickly as us.

  • In the event we do not finish in time, Techo will bring a group of volunteers back the following weekend to ensure it gets completed. Techo provides a PDF highlighting the builds upon its completion so we can guarantee that all projects started will be finished.

Day Four: Free Day & Departures

After an unforgettable few days together, the choice is yours:

  • Relax & Recharge – Take it slow with a leisurely morning at Hotel Naura, enjoying a coffee in the courtyard or a stroll through the local neighborhood.

  • Explore Oaxaca – Wander Oaxaca’s colorful markets, visit museums, or savor the city’s world-famous cuisine before heading home.

  • Extend Your Stay – Stay a few extra days to dive deeper into the culture, visit nearby villages, or head out to the coast for beaches and surfing.

For those returning home, you can catch a shuttle or taxi back to OAX Airport for your departure flight.
